Previous meeting's minutes

Present

Alice Curteis, Averill Marks, Marie and Peter Robinson, Bruce Ryan, Audrey Salters

1. Fairtrade Foundation logo

AC clarified the correct use of the term Fairtrade following the Fairtrade Foundation's guidelines. Any certificates we award can use our own Town Campaign logo, and can indicate support of the Fairtrade campaign and use of Fairtrtade products. Use of the Fairtrade Foundation logo or the word 'Fairtrade' (as in Fairtrade Workplace) must not imply accreditation by them.

MR to investigate categories of premises accredited by the Foundation, and criteria for Fairtrade Zones.

It is hoped to display the certificate at the public library, the Community Council notice board, and at the Burgh Chambers.

action: MR, AC

2. Developments from Fairtrade Town Declaration

Visit Scotland wish to include a sentence about Fairtrade Town status in a brochure about Fife: wording to be checked by AC. The President of the St Andrews B&B Association hopes to promote use of Fairtrade products among the members (serving them at breakfast and having them available in bedrooms) and would like to have a Fairtrade symbol included in associated literature. It was agreed to adopt criteria from the Keswick campaign for such a symbol, i.e

  • as a minimum, Fairtrade tea and coffee are provided in both the dining room and bedrooms.
  • some establishments serve Fairtrade tea and coffee exclusively
  • others offer the option of non-Fairtrade tea and coffee as alternatives to Fairtrade
  • some also serve other Fairtrade products
  • all are committed to the principles of Fairtrade
  • all have literature available on Fairtrade

AC to attend their annual meeting to publicise Fairtrade and discuss suppliers.
