UK Fairtrade Town Campaign
Fairtrade in the UK

Business arising from minutes of meeting on 14 March 2005

  1. Bruce to ensure that the Community Council uses Fairtrade products during St Andrews Week.
  2. There's no need to have a flagship employer in a small town.

Constitution

  1. Bruce talked us through his draft of the constitution.
  2. Following discussion about the legal implications of a constitution it was agreed that Alice will contact CARF to check what status it has.
  3. Bruce to email draft to all. We will have an account with Co-op Smile.

Workplace/B&B campaign

  1. Alice and Marie have visited members of the St Andrews Merchants Association with samples, Fairtrade literature and the Workplace Pledge and the intention is to visit almost all of them and then B&Bs etc which are not members of the association.
  2. There are now 12 known Fairtrade Workplaces or B&Bs, with many more still to be contacted as a follow-up to the visits. Response has been very positive on the whole.
  3. The Citizen included a small piece on Fairtrade Workplaces last week and it's hoped they will publish a photo this week or next.
  4. Izzy and Chris to do some visiting too after exams.
  5. Alice to email Marie names of businesses to visit, and a list of those already pledged to Bruce.
  6. We worked on the wording of a certificate (as opposed to a pledge) for B&Bs/hotels/guest houses. Bruce to produce these as a pdf.

Grants

  1. Once we have a constitution it will be possible to submit the two grant applications.
  2. Alice to go ahead with completing these now, applying for money to pay for
    (a) our own website (about £60 for two years)
    (b) a 12-page leaflet
    (c) the cost of the declaration ceremony.
  3. Bruce to get estimate for leaflet; Alice to calculate cost of ceremony.
  4. Marie's daughter, Janet, is willing to do illustrations to add to Bruce's leaflet design.
  5. Chris to get more copies of Hebden Bridge leaflet. Everyone to think about content and send ideas to Bruce.

University campaign

After a meeting on 18 May Chris will be able to give an idea of the likely timetable for completing the 5 goals. It turned out not to be possible to submit the proposal to the PARC meeting earlier in the year; this will now happen in June. Further information is needed from the Fairtrade Foundation about what proportion of departments and offices have to be included.

Izzy has been in contact with the head of Purchasing; issues such as the supply of fairly traded coffee in sachets for machines need to be resolved

AOB

  1. Bruce requested that details of Fairtrade cafés be sent to him/Pete Lindsay for Event.
  2. Alice to approach Joyce Taylor re joining the committee. Chris can liaise with her re Quaker involvement, perhaps with the Workplaces campaign.
  3. Bruce to mention use of Fairtrade products at the hospital users' group he's involved in for the new hospital/health centre.

Next meeting

Tuesday 14th June 2005, 7·30, Alice's house, with updates on action to emailed by June 7th.

Silke to be invited to next meeting. We need to finalise the constitution at the next meeting so Alice to check with everyone that they will be able to attend.
