Progress so far

Goal 1 (Council involvement)

The Community Council (CC) supports Fairtrade and promotes awareness of it with the logo and a message of support for the campaign on the CC's website and in the free 'Event - what's on in St Andrews' leaflet. Bruce is the CC's Fairtrade representative.

Alice has been in touch with Kate Hughes, manager of the Fife Council local office and discussed support for Fairtrade and the campaign with her.

Goal 2 (retail availability)

There are already more than enough outlets, both retail and catering, to fulfil the basic requirement for availability of Fairtrade products in the town.

Goal 3 (use by local organisations)

Only four workplaces/local organisations so far known to use Fairtrade products:
• Scottish Information Commission
• Hope Park Church
• St Leonards Church
• Quakers.

Chris D promotes workplace use in Alldays.

Goal 4 (media coverage)

Media coverage so far includes 3 articles in the St Andrews Citizen, including two photos. These referred to
• Alice's presentation to the Community Council in April,
• the launch of the campaign in Alldays on September 8th and
• Fairtrade Tasting Day on September 25th in which 11 shops and cafés took part.

An article and photos will be in St Andrews in Focus in November.

Goal 5 (local campaign group)

The steering group consists of
• a Community Councillor (Bruce)
• a representative of local business (Chris D),
• a member of the local Co-op members committee (Reta)
• a representative of a local church (Audrey)
• campaigners (Alice, Marie, George),

What next?

Goal 1 (Council involvement)

Bruce will urge the CC to use Fairtrade refreshments at associated events. The 'Event' leaflet could be distributed further afield, especially within the University - library, residences etc.

Bruce to contact Lib Dem councillors to request that they have a Fairtrade policy.

Bruce to liaise with Kate Hughes and continue discussions about
• use of Fairtrade refreshments in local office
» Fairtrade Town signs for the entrance to the town
• application for grant

Goal 2 (retail availability)

Alice to produce a local Fairtrade directory.

Bruce to create campaign website (needs town website URL from Alice) and include campaign info on his existing pages.

Alice to provide steering group members with contact details for Safeway/Morrison HQ so that all can mention recent removal of Fairtrade tea from the shelves. (Sarah True, Press Officer/Consumer PR, Head Office, email sarah.true@morrisonsplc.co.uk tel 01924 875 120)

Goal 3 (use by local organisations)

All group members to raise this with friends and contacts.

Alice to contact B&Bs and hotels.

We need a 'flagship employer' to take part - the University?

Bruce to produce sticky labels with Fairtrade logo for workplaces to display.

We may need to buy Fairtrade Foundation posters.

The issue of resistance to Fairtrade products was discussed. Audrey explained how a tasting session at Hope Park Church had raised awareness and reassured people of the quality of Fairtrade coffee.

Margaret described the Dundee City campaign's presentation of certificates to workplaces at a Fairtrade Fortnight ceremony.

Alice to contact the Merchants Association.

Goal 4 (media coverage)

Margaret described how a producer's visit to Dundee was a very effective promotional event.

Suggestions for futher links which would provide potential for media coverage included:
Alumnus Chronicle
• junior football club
• trade unions.

Goal 5 (local campaign group)

Plans for Fairtrade Fortnight to be made at the next meeting. Alice to order Fairtrade Foundation packs of materials and samples.
